Reflections (2024)
for Wind Symphony, originally featuring singing wall sculptures by Dr. Lisa Coons and Steven Pierce
Upon being selected as the 2023 winner of Western Michigan University’s Large Ensemble Competition, I received the opportunity to compose a new work for performance by the WMU Wind Symphony. Reflections was created as a sonic self-portrait in three connected miniatures using motives that had been circling my mind in the months leading up to its conception, and it frames them with postminimal influence while exploring techniques that blur the grids of rhythm and meter. It begins and ends with performers brushing their hands across their bodies, drawing the physical self to thematic focus and encouraging meditation regarding bodies as ever-changing.
