Shores of Peace (2020)
for mixed chorus (7 spoken soloists, 8-part octet, and 8-part choir)
“Shores of Peace” was composed through a collaboration between Western Michigan University’s Departments of Music Composition and Vocal Studies. Responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, student composers were invited to explore themes of distance and isolation through short choral works that could be performed through a virtual medium. Setting Thomas Hardy’s “In Death Divided” and Ella Wheeler Wilcox’s “Slipping Away,” this project reflects on life and death as intrinsic to the human experience and our shared relationships with time. While individual experiences are expansively varied and at times overwhelming, I find moments of peace in acknowledging such experiences that bind us.
